You could set your watch by

29 Jul

You could set your watch by annual pay raises. Seniority was the standard for upward mobility, but that was long ago.

Survival today takes a lot more. If you have a job, you?re probably working harder and longer than you were ten years ago, earning fewer pay raises, benefits and languishing on the promotion stepladder.

People used to have career master-plans: Get a degree, get a job, and retire with a pension and full benefits. Today, career planning is an oxymoron. Technology, reengineering, and a global economy have altered the career landscape. To survive, you have to learn to manage your career and your life in a much different workplace.

You must understand that there is less loyalty and trust. Employers and employees today don?t expect lifelong commitments from each other anymore. Now you have the freedom to choose your own path.

There are fewer and fewer opportunities for upward mobility and downsizing means survivors usually work more.

Size Up Your Siding

Size Up Your Siding

Market Wire, July, 2010

(Family Features) Power washing… sanding and scraping… painting… keeping a home’s exterior in good condition can take a lot of time, effort and money. And it often leads homeowners to wonder if there are ways to improve their home without all the work. If this sounds like you, low-maintenance siding may be the answer you’re looking for.

In fact, a recent American Institute of Architects report showed that 75 percent of the residential architects surveyed are seeing growing interest in low-maintenance exterior materials such as fiber-cement board and stone.

Re-siding can be a very good investment. According to the 2009 to 2010 Cost vs. Value Report conducted by Remodeling magazine, replacing home siding has one of the highest returns-on-investment among home improvement projects. Re-siding with fiber cement, for example, gives 23 percent more return-on-investment than a garage addition and 15 percent more than adding a second story.

How do you know if it’s time to re-side your home?
Paul Gentzel, National Repair & Remodel Business Manager of James Hardie Building Products, says homeowners should ask themselves these questions:

What’s the siding’s condition?
Is there evidence of deterioration, such as sagging, cracking, buckling, blistering or discoloration? As vinyl siding ages, pieces may become loose or fall off. “Keep in mind that individual vinyl siding pieces are difficult to replace and cannot be color-matched,” says Gentzel.

How are the trim and soffit areas holding up?
These are often in high-exposure areas and are vulnerable to wear and weathering, so wood and vinyl in particular may need to be replaced entirely over a house’s lifespan.

What’s the maintenance schedule?
Siding materials have different life spans and maintenance requirements. “As siding wears out,” says Gentzel, “the effort and cost of maintaining tired siding can add up to be more expensive than installing new siding.”

How’s the curb appeal?
If your home looks faded or is starting to look run-down, re-siding can be the quickest and most cost-effective solution to update and beautify it.

“In making a siding decision,” says Gentzel, “it’s important to weigh the look you like against its cost and upkeep. For example, homeowners may opt for vinyl siding over fiber cement because of initial sticker price — but not take into account that, unlike vinyl, fiber cement is resistant to minor impact and will retain its look for a very long time.”

James Hardie Building Products, Inc. offers a wide variety of fiber-cement sidings, from boards that resemble wood to panels that look like stucco. Their revolutionary ColorPlus Technology comes with a multi-coat, factory applied, baked-on paint finish that is guaranteed not to chip, peel or crack, ensuring your home looks better, longer.

The Re-Siding Process
Step One: Covering up the old problem is rarely recommended. The way to do a job right is to remove the old siding entirely. This allows the new siding to be installed as if it were your original exterior.

Step Two: Before the new exterior is applied, the existing structure should be inspected for moisture damage, mold, termites or rot. Covering your old siding with vinyl siding can potentially prevent serious structural problems from being discovered.

Step Three: A weather resistant barrier, such as HardieWrap weather barrier, should be applied to create an extra layer of moisture and wind protection. Most building codes today require it, in fact.

Step Four: Your new siding should be installed according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. If installing James Hardie siding, ask your contractor for a best practices installation guide.

For more information on siding choices, and to download the free guide, “Everything You Must Know Before You Re-Side Your Home,” visit www.jameshardie.com .

Measure for Measure
An installer will calculate how much siding a home needs, but you can make a rough estimate yourself. Consumer Reports recommends this method:

Determine the area of each rectangular section of a house by multiplying the height times the width (in feet).
Multiply the approximate height and width of triangular surfaces, such as gables.
Divide each total by two.
Add all the totals.
Divide the total square footage by 100 to estimate how many squares of siding are needed. (Prices listed are per square, which equals 100 square feet.)
To allow for waste, don’t subtract for doors, windows or other areas that will not be covered

Cost of the damage? There’s no charge!

0 Comments | Milton Keynes Citizen (Milton Keynes, England), Feb 5, 2004

A GROUP of teenagers say their car was lifted inches off the ground by an angry rhinoceros’s horn at Woburn Safari Park.

But the park has played down the incident saying there was “no charge”.

The three youths had been for an afternoon drive through an enclosure in their white Vauxhall Corsa when they met Pongola, a white female rhino.

Driver Mark Freeman, from Ashley Green, Herts, said: “The rhino was standing there in the middle of the road and would not let us pass.

“It was scary – we didn’t know what it was going to do next.”

Mark and his two passengers say the rhino then charged the car and pushed its horn under the front wing.

It retreated and then went for the wing again, lifting the Corsa several inches off the road. Mark, aged 18, blew his horn and the frightened Pongola galloped off.

“I’ve got a great trophy – a hubcap with a horn-shaped hole in it,” he added.

Pongola, one of the park’s two female white rhinos, was brought over to Woburn last summer from Prague Zoo which had been devastated by floods.

A park spokesman said that a ranger had witnessed the whole incident which begun with the two rhinos crossing the road to their shelter.

She said: “All the cars were asked to move on by the ranger and the other cars complied with this request, but the car in question did not, and did not move even when the ranger asked a second time.

“The rhino was unsettled by the proximity of the white Corsa and caused some damage to the nearside of the car above the wheel arch.”

AUSTRALIAN OPEN:

0 Comments | Charleston Daily Mail, Jan 19, 2010 | by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

MELBOURNE, Australia – Justine Henin’s new, philosophical outlook on life and tennis comes with a few fringe benefits. She’s dining out more, for one thing.

The relentless intensity that characterized the diminutive Belgian as she won seven Grand Slam singles titles before retiring 20 months ago has given way to a more self-assured, open manner in her second coming to the game.

“I’m a little less superstitious about the past,” Henin said after her 6-4, 6-3 win over fellow Belgian Kirsten Flipkens to the Australian Open on Monday. “I’ve tested a different restaurant every day since I’ve arrived – that never happened in the past.

“I feel like I’ve evolved,” she added, laughing, “and there are things that don’t have a role in success or failure.”

Henin is still driven by a challenge, and that’s what brought her back to Melbourne Park for her first major since a quarterfinal loss to Maria Sharapova at the 2008 Australian Open.

Unranked and playing as a wild card entry, Henin will now play a second-round match against fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva, who won the Olympic gold medal in Beijing only a few months after Henin retired in May 2008, opting not to defend her French Open and Olympic titles.

A win over Dementieva could put her on course for a quarterfinal against fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters, whose win at the U.S

Each layer of your

29 Jul

Each layer of your oil painting should have a higher oil content then the ones below it.

To create the illusion of distance in your paintings

paint receding objects with cooler less intense color. Objects that advance are warmer and more intense.

If you are feeling uninspired

don’t get discouraged. Try taking a walk outside, breath in the air, look around at the beautiful earth God created. Try playing music while you are painting. You will be surprised how music can affect your painting. Visit a museum or local gallery. Viewing other works of art can really get your creative juices flowing.

When holding your brush

avoid holding your brush like a pencil too close to the bristles. Oil brushes are made long for a reason so that you can paint further away from the canvas. Practice holding the brush toward the middle and end of the handle.

Maintain a clean organized working environment

– Get yourself into the habit of keeping your work area clean and organized. Have an abundant supply of rags or paper towels nearby.

People, animals take cover from heat in East

0 Comments | Columbian; Vancouver, Wash., Jul 28, 2005 | by The Associated Press

People headed for air-conditioned buildings and water parks Wednesday and shaded their pets and livestock as the deadly week- old heat wave lingered across the East.

Heat warnings and advisories were in effect Wednesday for the District of Columbia, Virginia, North and South Carolina, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and parts of Pennsylvania, New York and Georgia, the National Weather Service said.

Business was booming at ice cream shops and water parks.

“The heat is definitely driving people to the water,” said Emily Ball, manager at Wild River Country in North Little Rock, Ark

This does not necessarily mean renting office

28 Jul

This does not necessarily mean renting office space if you run a home business. It can mean anything from finding a quieter spot in the home in which to work to rescheduling working hours until the children in bed.

By making adjustments to create a quieter and calmer environment one can increase their efficiency tremendously. It may require some creative thinking but it can be done cheaply, if not completely free of charge.

Adding Motivation

All of us seem to have some point during each day when our mind begins to wander and we begin to invent things to do (or not to do). Find those moments and combat the urge to abandon your time management plan by injecting an additional element of motivation into your schedule.

You may want to have an inspirational quotation or two at the ready or some other reminder of why time management is important to you. A motivational trigger can help you stay on track.

By removing temptations, finding solitude and adding motivation one can increase their efficiency tremendously without spending a dime.

Consider including siblings,

28 Jul

Consider including siblings, if any, your partner, and take pregnancy pictures that aren’t so “traditional”. Strip down and wrap up in white robe, or guaze – with a dark background, this is beautiful. Siblings touching or kissing baby belly makes for a touching moment. And your partners hands on your belly, speak love. Of course, studio pictures are best towards the end of pregnancy, but don’t wait too long either!

Some studios specialize in pregnancy and newborn pictures – check your phone book or ask around.

Belly Cast It

Belly Cast, or Belly Mask, has become a popular method of preserving pregnant bellies. Belly Cast kits are inexpensive and easy to find, particularly online. They are easy to do, but don’t try to do a belly cast yourself! You will definitely need another set of hand and sometimes an extra set is helpful. No baby belly inhibitions? Make a party of it! Invite your girlfriends over for some messy fun. In the end, you have a plaster cast of your belly to decorate, hang on the wall or sit on a shelf.

Decorated Belly

Women are becoming more willing to bare their pregnant bellies. Decorating your baby belly is a fun way to show it off.
